"The Reawakening of Pakistan"

By Major (r) Khalid Nasr

The geo - political arena in Pakistan gives us a hope that Pakistani nation is in the process of reawakening after a deep slumber. The recent judicial crises led to this reawakening. The main objective behind the lawyers’ movement, media and opposition's struggle is very positive but their approach towards achievement of this objective is not all that positive. It may create a bad image of Pakistan. In my opinion, instead of being too aggressive and violent, the leadership of this struggle should have let the ballot box and courts be the deciding factors for the better interest of Pakistan, rather than behaving like a mafia, and pretending to be behaving under the influence of “champak and brief case strategy.” They should register their grievances and opinions on a positive note. There is a strong need of a paradigm shift in the mind-set of our political leaders. This is high time that we should adopt the policy of live and let others live peace fully. Our political leaders should have the moral courage of listening to others and should give space to other parties.

In my opinion, the political leaders must agree on these basic principles of politics:

Handling political issues and differences themselves and stop requesting army for interference

Avoid victimizing the opposition leaders and respecting their point of view.

Ensuring fair and regular elections within their political parties.

Rather than self-nominations for life time chair person ship. New, young and proactive leadership should be encouraged.

The government and opposition should ensure:
a. Cooperation and coordination between president, prime minister, chief justice, army chief and opposition leader.

b. Good governance, law and order, justice for all respect of ballot box.

c. A shadow government to take over in emergency rather than waiting for army to take a chance.

Our politicians must create a culture of mutual trust and respect and try to improve their credibility through their actions. Only slogans and no action policy must be avoided.

Keeping view the security threats a controlled democracy would be suitable for Pakistan in which the national security council to have a major role.

The common man in Pakistan is not bothered about Musharraf’s uniform and democracy. He is simply interested in a peaceful and respectable living.Benazir's grand return may act as a life-saving elixir for the besieged democratic system. Both Musharraf and Benazir must recognize that the return of Nawaz Sharif is going to be essential if the forthcoming elections are to have credibility. It is hoped that in the coming scenario--president, prime minister and army chief would work under mutual respect and understanding and keep the law and order situation at top priority followed by education and job opportunities’ -employment, lack of proper education and lack of good governance are the core issues to be addressed.

Instead of being over-ambitious, the olitical aspirants should be objective. Let us not forget that we were least prepared for independence when it came, and the Quaid didn't get lease of life to put things in order when the chaos started. Why blame Army, when civilian bureaucrats turned politicians didn't behave. When Justice Munir as the then Chief Justice propounded the "Law of necessity'.When Chaudhary Mohammad Ali presented PObjectives Resolution as part of the Constitution, whenQuaid had declared on more than one occasion that Pakistan was to be a secular democratic State. Who was responsible for the coup staged by Ayyub Khan other than Sikandar Mirza? Bhutto & others succeeding himintroduced the World for the first time ever to the concept of Civilian Martial Law Administrators. The greedy men at the helm of affairs hardly afforded any opportunity for political leadership to emerge.Power was not transferred to majority party, which led to the secession of East Pakistan. Isn't it an evidence of strength that we are existing as a Nation today. How long will this state of affairs last, is anyone's guess; but we should be doubly cautious to give it any further s on any pretext including the one of theocracy. Jameel Zaidi
